A recent nationwide study conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety reveals that when traffic safety officials raise speed limits on highways, it often leads to an increase in car accidents caused by speeding drivers. The study sheds light on the potential risks associated with raising speed limits and highlights the importance of considering safety implications when making such decisions.
"The movement in statehouses to raise speed limits is happening across the country," said Jennifer Ryan, director of state relations for AAA. "But the benefits are overrated, and the risks are understated. Increasing speed limits does not always yield the positive results envisioned by traffic planners."
Do higher speed limits cause more accidents?
The recent study conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety focused on 12 highways across the nation, examining the impact of both lowering and raising speed limits. In this comprehensive analysis, researchers observed the following key findings:
- Two highways with higher speed limits experienced a notable increase in car accidents.
- Conversely, highways with lower speed limits showed a decline in the number of car accidents.
- Despite expectations, travel times for all highways in the study remained unchanged, challenging the assumption that increasing speed limits would improve travel efficiency on highways, as often advocated.
"It is critical to consider the safety implications when local transportation authorities contemplate making changes to posted speed limits," said Diana Gugliotta, Director of Public Affairs at AAA Northeast.
Speeding as a factor in crashes
In recent years, speeding has emerged as one of the leading causes of serious and fatal car accidents nationwide. Year after year, the number of speeding-related fatalities has seen an upward trend, raising alarms for road safety.
In 2021, speeding-related car accident deaths reached a staggering 12,330, marking the third consecutive year of increase, as reported by the National Safety Council. These fatalities accounted for 29 percent of all car accident deaths in 2021, witnessing a 7.9 percent rise compared to the previous year.
Although there was a slight dip in speeding-related deaths in 2022, they still represented 27 percent of all car accident fatalities, according to the AAA's report.
Speed-related accidents in Washington State
Washington State has experienced a surge in speed-related car accidents, witnessing an upward trend year after year in the past decade. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, the state recorded a 27.1 percent increase in speeding-related fatalities, based on comprehensive car accident data gathered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The statistics for 2021 show an even more distressing reality. According to the NHTSA data, a staggering 30.7 percent of all car accident deaths in Washington State were directly attributed to speeding drivers. This figure surpasses the national average.
Reasons why speeding is dangerous
The impact of speeding on car accidents cannot be underestimated, as it significantly amplifies the severity and fatality rates for several crucial reasons:
- Forceful Collisions: When a speeding car crashes into another vehicle, the resulting force is considerably greater, leading to more extensive vehicle damage and severe injuries.
- Reduced Reaction Time: Speeding leaves drivers with significantly less time to react to sudden changes on the road, making accidents more likely and reducing their ability to avoid collisions altogether.
- Dangerous Driving Habits: Speeding drivers often partake in other hazardous behaviors, such as texting while driving or driving under the influence of alcohol, further escalating the risks on the road.
